Designer: Jean- Louis Roubira
Players: 3-6
Age: 6+
Game time: 30 minutes
Game Objective: " The goal of the other players is to find which image is from the storyteller amongst the displayed ones."
Board Game Contains:
One game board inside the box (scoring track)
84 cards
36 voting tokens in 6 different colours numbered from 1 to 6
6 wooden rabbits (rabbeeples)
Game Summary:
One player is the storyteller for the turn and looks at the images on the 6 cards in her hand. From one of these, she makes up a sentence and says it out loud (without showing the card to the other players). Each other player selects the card in their hands which best matches the sentence and gives the selected card to the storyteller, without showing it to the others.
The storyteller shuffles her card with all the received cards. All pictures are shown face up and every player has to bet upon which picture was the storyteller's.If nobody or everybody finds the correct card, the storyteller scores 0, and each of the other players scores 2. Otherwise the storyteller and whoever found the correct answer score 3. Players score 1 point for every vote for their own card. The game ends when the deck is empty or if a player scores 30 points. In either case, the player with the most points wins the game.
Game Review:
I first played Dixit at a friend's house. At first, I didn't truly understand how these adorable stack of cards became one of the best board games ever played. Most board games test your logic, wit, dexterity or speed, Dix it tests your ability to play with the imagination of your friends. As fun and as "relaxing" the game sounds in comparison to toher board games, this game also requires a bit of strategy. As a storyteller, you have to make sure you're being subtle about the cards you put down in order to trick your friends into voting for the wrong cards- more points for you!
There are a few expansions of this game, so there's so many different artwork to choose from (mind you, they're all amazing)! There's just so much imagery in every card, it will definitely get your imagination going. Because anybody can be the storyteller, the topics in each round are totally random; less bias, more creativity! Dix It is also a game that is super easy to set up and explain to friends. The game can be as deep or as shallow as you make it. You are welcome to tell us a 2 minute tale of an Apple finding a friend in the forest or just opt to say a one word topic to get the ball rolling.
However, if you like a competetive, confrontational game, this one may not be for you or your group of friends! This game is family friendly, it doesn't necessarily have problem or a puzzle that needs solving. It's not really even about accumulating the most points ( I know that's how you determine the winner), for me it's more enjoyable to hear the stories people come up with and to see the cards they associate with theri stories. This game touches a lot more on your people reading skills, especially if you're playing with strangers, because you're not trying to pick the best one, you're trying to figure out which one the specific storyteller put down. An excellent example would be playing with my mother. She is so literal with everything, if I had said my topic was Apple and I put down a card with Snow White on it and there was one card with a big apple in the corner, she'll definitely pick that one. She'd probably ask why I chose Snow White when "clearly" my topic is an apple. See what I mean?
This then brings me to my final point about Dix It! It's definitely fun and more comfortable to play with people you already and know. With this game, playing with people you already know can actually prove to either be more enjoyable or just plain irritating. Certain cards could be played only to target specific players. For example, if you and your buddy have inside jokes that only you tow have ever encountered, then telling that story paired with a card that relates solely to that story could guarantee points for both of you. I still enjoy this, because for me the best of the game is reading people and anticipating what they would put down based on their personality. But this could really annoy most people, especially if you're playing with new friends.
